Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Yet Another Top 10 List

Hi All -

Many years ago, when I first discovered this place, I was like a kid in a candy store. I downloaded shows I'd seen, shows I'd heard about, upgraded old umteenth gen AUD cassettes, but then what ... So I started searching out recommendations. DeadBase had a 100 best list. I found a few "Essential Tapes" type lists. I mined the old rec.music.gd list. Pretty soon I had some solid recommendations but they were spread over a dozen files in all different formats.

So I set up a spreadsheet. I took what I had and correlated it into one place. I added in vault releases (they ought to know, right? Ok, sometimes they don't.), and tallied it all against a list of every show. That was some time shortly before the SBDs were pulled. Since then I've continued to add to it from sporadic visits to this forum and a few others - adding points from "Best Shows of 81", or TDIH types of posts. I've generally not added any more points from "Best Shows of All Time" lists. I've also collected particularly compelling comments and reviews.

Cliff's in there, and Dr. Flashback, and Stratocaster, and Purple Gel, and Cap'n Doubledose many, many others.

I don't often have the opportunity to closely listen to a whole show in one sitting. And even if I did, I don't have Cliff's inclination for 100 point analysis - a show that might be an 80 today could be a 100+ for me next week. Set, setting and state of mind all have a strong influence. Dead shows were all good, many were great and a few were and continue to be mind-blowing. I've found that my collection of the conventional wisdom is useful in helping to steer me towards rewarding and enjoyable shows.

What follows is an excerpt listing the top 10 (mostly) shows from each year as tallied on my spreadsheet. This is far from scientific, but does represent many years of recommendations from a huge number of people. I decided not to include those shows with fewer than 3 recommendations, so a few years do not have 10 shows listed.

Believe it if you need it, if you don't just pass it on...

- John

This is a great post. Thanks John.

Three shows come to mind that I would like to see in there, though we all see these things differently (which is a good thing) - 03/02/69, 10/31/71, and 11/30/80.

EDIT: big "whoops"! You must go back, you must BOTH see that 6-14-68 is placed nicely within that sequence for the yr; go ahead and give it "10" votes, according to me, and as well as, well, me.

Hey guys: good approach! Using the # of recomm's, UJ, was in essence a "voting" approach, and the list UU provides, is precisely that (I assume, Bill, you are providing the list DMax/Beka compiled at DHook), one in which "board members" were asked to list top tens, and then the organizers "tallied" the "votes".

The one you did, UJ, is perhaps even more compelling since you have shows with + 30 "votes" (not sure you were able to keep each and every recomm "independent"...or did you?), whereas the DHook one in some cases (correct me if I mis-remember it, B) had as few as 10-12 "voters" in some years...

Impt bit of information; I certainly don't see ANY show of "mine" (pers favs) missing from either list for the early era...

Sir William, you are correct(as was Cliff)as to the source of the list I posted. And you are also correct that 10-12 "voters" were all that participated in the compilation of most of the yearly lists. And, in deference to Cliff, some of those "voters" are not quite as astute as most who assemble here.

Well, for the early era, at least 68-71, the voters were made up of a handful of folks at the time that "overlapped" (GoP, BE, DMax, etc) Hook and LMA, and frankly, the top ten was/is largely concordant for those yrs, showing that there is generally "agreement".

EG, when I voted over there at Hook, I used CapnDose, Dr Flback, CLIFF, Strat (ie, prior lists posted by those individuals here, etc), and my own "# of recent listening events", to cast my vote, so there's not much room for variation...that's not to say there won't be particular pts of difference, and I can say NOTHING about 72/73 that vary greatly tween the lists (much less latter yrs), but I wouldn't apologize for it--it's a list like any other, and the notion that it's somehow lacking or out-right "wrong" in some sense is just silly.

The only factors that should be acknowledged are a) the sample size is small (ie, number of voters; UJ's is simply "better" [if one wants to use such a term] because he counted more people--votes), and b) the voters were generally biased in their experience/preferences for the smaller sample size (perhaps why someone suggested they were "better" with latter yrs or some such). However, pt 2, the potential "bias" of the group sampled is present (potentially "reversed" I'd assume) for UJ's as well...

Now, as to addition of 6-14-68 and the deletion of 4-29-71 (or at least one tune anyhow...), I've covered that before.

Tell -

It looks like 6/14/68 just missed the cut - tied with 8/21 at 7 votes. One had to go and I went with the better sounding source. Personally, I think they're both outstanding. Is one better than the other? - I don't know and honestly don't care. If I'm in the mood for some '68 I can't go too far wrong with either of them. For the purposes of my spreadsheet I have tried to be reasonably objective in collecting and recording the data. For the excerpt posted here, I also tried to use reasonably objective criteria to resolve ties when needed to stay within the "top ten" format.

Your vote(s) for 6/14 are in the data at least once but, I'll have to be honest here, your favorites are already well represented in my list so I don't think I have added any more votes from you for the past couple years.

Like I say - it's not very scientific. I know that some people have made the same recommendations multiple times and I'm sure many of those have been counted more than once. (I set up fields for each bulk source of recommendations early on, but quickly decided that tracking individual people was way beyond the scope of the project.) During the past 2-3 years I have made an effort to minimize duplicate recommendations by sticking mostly with this forum where I recognize many of the names and by not adding more votes from the usual suspects - unless they comment that the show is new to them. Likewise, I no longer record top ten-type lists, but do try to make note of recommendations for lesser-known shows.

The DeadHook list reprinted above, however, is included. I don't remember for sure, but I probably scored 2 points for each of those shows since the list represented a group effort but the group included many names I also recognized from this forum.

Very cool; I would only note the singularity of that particular show. It's a "stand alone" show in that it possesses such an amazing version of StSt, and the best FBack, IMHO, into the Eleven of all things, ever...I'd take it over most all other shows of 68 for its unique performances, and fact we are missing the months surrounding it. EG, the Aug shows, 21-24, are largely similar to one another, as are Oct, etc.

Likewise, there's a similarity to Jan/Feb sound, and so on.

Not that I am saying those shows don't all deserve to be on the list, BUT if I were making a list for folks to get "full exposure to 68", and could only pick five shows, it'd be on it...think of how for fall, 68, almost any show "has the two suites", but no show has this bizarre hour of sound!

Too bad about the quality, eh?

Glaring omission number One-> 6-24-70 !!!
Not having that on the list is just like having no jelly on the PB&J. Or no jelly of any kind anywhere, ever. I will refrain from commenting fully on the "list" as a need to go vacate.

Someone (and it could be me if I knew how) ought to take the above mentioned transformative event and educate wherever these flimsy group of numbers emanated from.

I will say they seem to have a bit more clue on the last 10 years.

Agreed. But it's not surprising. There is not much serious music discussion at Deadhook and I don't find the folks who participate there to be particularly knowledgeable about the Grateful Dead. It's more of a social website...

"There is not much serious music discussion at Deadhook. It's more of a social website."

True Cliff, but isn't any list purely subjective? I believe the old saying goes, "One man's meat is another man's poison."

Then Sly said it like this, "I am no better and neither are you. We are the same whatever we do. You love me, you hate me, you know me and then; you still can't figure out the bag I'm in"*

*simply quoting lyrics...nothing personal intended

And if you visited more, you might be surprised at the level of Grateful Dead knowledge of some Deadhookers. Though even the most knowledgeable there don't seem to be as analytical and/or critical as LMA forumites.

B, how would I go about posting there (creating a thread?) about 6-24-70 as a guest poster?
That transportation event needs some talking up and I promise to be nice, in a nice way. ;-)
Seriously.

I'm not sure you can post as a "guest", but registering is painless and quick. And hey, if you register and then don't like the vibe you can always follow Cliff's lead and just not visit "us" anymore.

I think the gates may open to let me in. Waiting. My age and "What are Grateful Dead fans called?" answered with only slightly grated teeth. The things we do for love.

B, on the forums page, where do I go to create a post? Is that DHook's name for a thread? Which category would be the best? I have no idea where to place this, as the forums seem to be all over the place to me, and I am confused. Help, please.

Albert Pujols is a poster. Didn't know that. And a few familiar names.

Man, this place is not like my home. There are 50, 60 forums, categories, threads. It's not all together and simpler.
We may have a certain reputation, but our set up breeds a sense of community. And accountability, as it is all there for everyone to see right up on top. Also, with more eyes on the current topic, there is a focus on that topic, which I like. Gotta hit it when it's hot.

btw- To anyone concerned, I am not trashing DHook.

glad to hear that

but you if you were, you wouldn't be the first and no doubt you won't be the last...just as LMA isn't everyone's cup of tea, there are those that can't deal with Deadhook

"The Dead Zone" is the most active "forum". It is for "general discussion" Introduce yourself there, and you should receive the standard "Welcome Home!"

Just as a head's up, politics and religion are touchy subjects that were once verboten, but now are tolerated as long as the discussion stays civil, though you may notice some weirdness if you try to type "p-o-l-i-t-i-c-s"

Good luck getting on the 'hook. You've no doubt heard before how when I tried to sneak in a few years back I got a message saying that I had been 'preemptively banned from registration as being a known spammer'.

Never did find out who told them...

Wow. Never heard that story, or maybe I just forgot. It is so difficult to get banned there, "pre-emptively banned" seems....well sort of twilight zonish. Maybe you tried to get in in that weird switch-over/disappearing board owner time when it looked as though Deadhook was going to disappear.

Wow and double wow. More lists to copy and paste! What fun!

Unknown, I really like seeing the names of the venues with the shows. Personally I find it easier to scan that way. That way I can easily (a) confirm that lots of my faves are indeed Officially Sanctified as Good, (b) make notes of what needs to be added to my To Do list, and (c) have the fun of saying things like, "Hey, where's 9/18/74? 7/17/76? 11/24/79? 9/2/83? Silly silly people!" Of course, then I can go to Uncle John's list and find that other people AREN'T so silly ...

Ok, while I'm in sorting and listing mode, here's a list of all shows with 10 points or more on my list. 215 shows, or roughly the top 10%.

Look for your favorites, argue about ranking, and feel free to point out all glaring omissions.

P.S. The venues are included just for you Althea.

P.P.S. Number of points is now in the first column.

Thanks, John! That does make it so much easier. Then if you put spaces between the years (to continue with my Helpful Editing Hints) the patterns really emerge ... about a quarter of all 72 shows are mentioned and a third of 77. Just kinda interesting. Though poor '83 has been unjustly slighted. OK, not in comparison to, say, 72 or 77, but still, the omissions being, IMO, 9/2, 10/11, 10/14, 10/15, 10/31, 6/20, and perhaps the Red Rocks run. At least some of those should be there ... well, maybe next year!

Thank-you and a proper hello UJ. Very interesting work.
11/11/73 the most rec? I must have forgot to mention the 15, wait a second, no, I'm getting word that it was 21 recs for 6-24-70 this past year alone. Still in the low 40's but 11/11 watch out! :-)

Glad you like it Micah.

5/8/77 was in the lead since forever, but after the Winterland '73 collection came out 11/11 seemed to start getting more buzz.

Just can't figure the little-to-no-love for Oct., Nov., and Dec of '72.
Quite a head-scratcher.
